This June, the Community Over Code Conference took place in Bratislava, Slovakia. Fiter’s Tomás Ferreiro visited the event for the first time and covered the Fiter and Fineract angle in his session titled “Evolving FinTech Landscapes: Driving Business Innovation”. Over the 3-day event, Tomas was both intrigued and inspired and returned with valuable insights about his experience. Here are Tomas’ main takeaways from Community Over Code:

Tomas’ Session

Tomas’ session titled “Evolving Fintech Landscapes: Driving Business Innovation with Fineract” took place on the second day of the Community Over Code event. The session detailed Fineract’s pivotal role in banking innovation through market adversity, exploring Fineract’s positive impact on banking transformation in FinTech.

Through actual success cases, Tomas demonstrated how Fineract is addressing present and future market challenges to achieve adaptability and strategic advantage worldwide for its customers, and how Fiter, the world’s leading Fineract implementer is future-proofing businesses through Fineract.

It’s all about community

The companies and individuals who make up the open-source community are all about being part of something bigger.  Community Over Code (COC) is the platform to share knowledge and foster the community. As a company that relies on community software, Fiter is committed to engage in the Community Over Code event. Fiter attended COC to share experience and lessons related to Fineract, as well as to meet with the people involved in the project, listen, learn, connect and collaborate.

During the event, Tomas exchanged ideas with people who excel at what they do, including renowned engineers working in top tier companies. Beyond being impressed by the personas themselves, Tomas was impressed by their humility and closeness. Participants created a safe space for questions, for conversations and for sharing. Everyone felt the sense of community and equality, regardless of background.

The industry’s best kept secret

Fineract is a core banking system used by more than 2,500 entities worldwide, with great robustness and a truly differential competitive advantage. However, Fineract’s main challenge, from Tomas’ experience, is that it is still a little-known solution among financial entities. For Fineract to be considered a viable alternative and for its unique value to be perceived, more companies need to become aware of its existence. Tomas is therefore highly active on LinkedIn, engaging with financial decision-makers and people from the industry to educate them on Fineract and increase market awareness.

The benefits of Fineract

Those privy to the power of Fineract implemented by Fiter, reap the following benefits:

  • Speed to market: next level capabilities through Fineract’s customizable architecture in record time.
  • Security and compliance: Fineract is regularly updated to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Seamless implementation by Fiter: Fiter is the #1 global implementer of Fineract, providing round the clock local support and global presence.
  • Community: Fineract is supported by the thriving Fineract open-source community, leveraging community synergy in driving businesses forward.
  • Zero licensing fees: organizations can now break free from hundreds of thousands of dollars in vendor fees through Fineract open-source technology.
  • Flexibility: Businesses leverage Fineract’s flexibility in optimizing their software to achieve next level performance.

Implementation by Fiter

With Apache Fineract being an open-source product, many companies display a certain level of nervousness when it comes to integrating Fineract technology at the core of their business.  Also, while Fineract is a robust product, it must be adapted to the needs and regulations of each country as well as customized correctly. Without adequate support, this can become a serious challenge.

Enter Fiter. Implemented skillfully, Fineract can provide organizations with the solutions they need to take their business to the next level in record time. With Fiter being the global leader in Fineract integrations and implementations, Fiter’s customers enjoy a customer experience like no other. With presence in over 15 cities worldwide and over 50 million end customers, Fiter has got you covered throughout the implementation process from planning to deployment to scaling and post-implementation support. Fiter’s job is not only to help customize or deploy but also to guide, accompany and instruct, drawing on its position as technology experts. Setting clear expectations is key to a successful implementation.

Software and sustainability

Community Over Code brings the future of open-source software to its participants. One of the more exciting lectures Tomas enjoyed at the event was Asim Hussain’s: “Doing for sustainability, what open source did for software.” In his lecture, Asim explained the history of the Impact Framework and its core concepts and demonstrated how to use it to measure the environmental impacts of a piece of software. The environmental impact of software and how to measure it is a truly eye-opening and informative topic, one of many innovative topics discussed during Community Over Code.

Network through footwork

Community Over Code is the place to be for networking. Tomas feels the best connections are those that transcend the work environment, where you start out bonding over work and end up with new friends. Tomas made 3 new friends at COC: Angad, Aayush and Yash. One of the most memorable evenings of the conference included Tomas, Angad, Aayush and Yash cycling around Bratislava after the conference and going for drinks. There’s nothing like a good integration!

Fiter’s Message in Code Over Community

Fiter is committed to revolutionizing the financial industry through Fineract. The reintroduction of the innovative FinTech Track played an important role in educating the community about the advantages of Fineract for small to large financial entities alike in the cutthroat financial sector.  The opportunity to introduce new audience to the technology Fiter works with and the work carried out at Fiter is Fiter’s way of giving back to the open-source community. Fiter and Tomas will continue to help businesses drive growth through Fineract.

On Meet Our Team this month, meet Deepika Choubey, Senior Software Engineer at Fiter! Deepika is the epitome of how passion for technology combined with enthusiastic problem-solving yields meaningful solutions to real-world problems.

Read on to learn more about Deepika’s professional journey that has landed her at Fiter, how she sees work at Fiter and within the FinTech industry, and how cooking and listening to music has morphed Deepika into a force to be reckoned with in FinTech.

The Why?

Throughout her career, Deepika has been continuously fascinated by the endless possibilities that software engineering offers in terms of innovation and impact. The fast-paced nature of the industry and the constant evolution of technologies fuels Deepika’s engagement and excitement for ongoing learning and growth.

The Where? Fiter, of course!

When the opportunity arose to join Fiter as a Senior Software Engineer, Deepika was immediately drawn to Fiter’s mission and the chance to work on cutting-edge projects with talented people. The ongoing contribution to impactful initiatives is not only satisfying but provides constant opportunity for skill development and professional growth. The entire process has been a rewarding one, allowing Deepika to apply her expertise toward meaningful projects and to make a positive impact on the world through technology.

The How? Challenges of the Role

The Senior Software Engineer role embodies several key challenges, with specific strategic approaches required to tackle each challenge effectively:

  1. Complexity of Projects: The work on large-scale systems and the implementation of new technologies includes inherent complexity. Thoroughly understanding the project and its complexity and compiling the required solution through personal analysis and collaboration with other team members leverages everyone’s strengths, expertise, and insights to resolve complex problems more effectively.
  2. Team Collaboration and Communication: While fostering effective collaboration and communication within teams is always fundamental to the success of any software project, this challenge is compounded when the teams are distributed geographically or cross-functionally. Fostering a culture of transparency, open communication, and knowledge-sharing within the team as well as maintaining regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and documentation helps ensure everyone is aligned and informed about the project’s progress and objectives.
  3. Keeping Up with Emerging Technologies: As a Senior Software Engineer, keeping up with advancements is crucial to staying relevant and delivering high-quality solutions. Thus, Deepika puts in the time needed for continuous learning through online courses provided and supported by Fiter. Deepika also encourages experimentation and innovation within her team, allowing team members to explore new technologies and approaches in a controlled environment.

Continuous Learning

To stay technically proficient and aligned with industry advancements, Deepika regularly utilizes online platforms for personal learning. Engaging with tech communities on platforms like Stack Overflow, pursuing professional certifications, participating in hands-on projects, and engaging in internal knowledge-sharing sessions within Fiter further Deepika’s expertise. This multifaceted approach keeps Deepika current with the latest technologies, continuously expands her skillset, and effectively contributes to innovative solutions in the dynamic field of technology.

Impactful Projects

Deepika recalls her two most impactful and rewarding projects since joining Fiter:  the development of the Sparkle and Caritas projects:
Sparkle was a rewarding project mainly due to Deepika’s involvement in its Odoo integration. Odoo is a powerful suite of open-source business applications that covers various business needs, including CRM, accounting, inventory management, and more. The Odoo integration had since been accepted by the MIFOS community.
The Caritas project also had substantial impact on Deepika’s growth, as it was during the Caritas project that Deepika mastered the integration of Microsoft Azure API for sending mails, and experienced working with angular 9 and material.

Both projects challenged Deepika to stretch her technical capabilities, collaborate effectively with colleagues, and think strategically about how technology can be used to improve people’s lives. The experience has propelled Deepika’s growth as a Senior Software Engineer at Fiter and equipped her with valuable skills and insights that she continues to apply in her work today.

Hobbies and Inspiration

When Deepika is not hard at work making an impact through technology, you can find her honing her skills and her focus through multiple creative outlets. Deepika enjoys cooking, thriving on the creativity and experimentation cooking offers, which in turn translates to innovative problem-solving in her professional life. When Deepika seeks relaxation and inspiration, she puts on some music, leveraging the fresh perspective the music generates in approaching challenges.

Deepika also loves to venture outdoors, spending time in nature and enjoying time with family members, all of which increase relaxation and satisfaction in her life. This assortment of hobbies offers a balanced outlet for creativity, stress relief, and personal growth.

FinTech Industry Trends

In the next few years, the FinTech industry will see continued growth driven by digital banking, blockchain, AI, and open banking. Software engineers should focus on building scalable, secure platforms, embracing AI and ML for risk assessment and customer experience enhancement. Compliance with evolving regulations and cybersecurity will remain paramount. Additionally, embedded finance and expanding access to underserved markets will drive innovation. Software engineers must adapt to these trends, mastering new technologies, and prioritizing seamless integration and user-centric design to shape the future of finance.

Technological Innovation at Fiter

Fiter’s approach to adopting new technologies involves thorough research, proof-of-concept trials, and collaboration across teams. The company prioritizes technologies that align with its project requirements, scalability needs, and long-term vision. Regular communication in town halls ensures that innovations are aligned with company goals, enhancing product quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Fiter maintains a balance between embracing cutting-edge technologies and mitigating risks, focusing on practicality and feasibility. Continuous evaluation and feedback loops ensure that Fiter’s technology stack remains dynamic and relevant in driving the company’s success. Fiter continuously evolves, using ChatGPT, copilot and additional new tools to improve productivity and effective solutions.

Fiter’s customer-centric approach, coupled with continuous monitoring of the direction of the FinTech industry and white space opportunities ensure Fiter’s customers stay relevant and ahead of the curb.

Marc Andreessen is famous for saying software is eating the world. It would be appropriate to add that now open-source software is eating software. But what makes open-source software so instrumental?

Javier Borkenztain, Fiter Co-founder and CEO, a member of the Apache Foundation, and an Apache Fineract PMC member, was a guest speaker at the FINOS and Linux Foundation conference. Here are his thoughts on loans, accounts, and transactions based on open-source software and why open-source software and specifically Apache Fineract is eating FinTech:

Standardization

Standardization is the reason OSS became the most important software in the industry. Open source is all about standardization. Contrary to other industries where a committee gives the stamp of approval and determines implementation priorities, OSS is quite cost-effective to test and identify what works and what doesn’t. Open-source projects have therefore become the de facto standard for some industries; for example, projects based on Cassandra, Linux, Hadoop, and other projects that have become the actual standard based on the large community of people using the software. In this way the software industry can easily determine what works best and upon which platform to build.

Community

The second important thing about open source is Community. Community always outperforms individuals and singular companies. A community is stronger, more resilient, and lasts longer than individual entities.

When using open-source software, individuals are also joining a community of volunteers around the world who support and create that software. The user is therefore not just enjoying free, open-source software, but actually using a product that was created by and for a community of volunteers of which the user is now a member.

Bye Bye, Vendor Lock-In

The third characteristic of OSS is that there is no vendor lock in. This means that the user enjoys the multiple options stemming from the community behind the product. Users are not bound by licensing and proprietary software.

The community has different tools, resources, people, companies, that support the user and offer various services without the user being tied down to just one vendor or distribution network.

This freedom and flexibility create a competitive advantage against businesses that are bound to one core system.

From a safe to a switch

Traditional financial institutions have served as a safe or vault of client assets. We are now witnessing a transition from the safe model to a switch model where financial institutions enable their users, the customers, to move their assets seamlessly around the world. The Rest API architecture supports the transformation from a safe to a switch.

How are FinTechs using Fineract?

Fineract is used in more than 2,000 financial institutions and FinTechs across 60 countries. FinTechs love many features offered by Fineract. Fineract’s architecture is based on Rest APIs which makes it easy to configure new products without the need for programming and also to connect with everything else in the world. The fact that add-on features are now a matter of configuration rather than actual development and that Fineract is cloud-ready and cloud agnostic makes Fineract very attractive to FinTechs and financial institutions. Fineract can be run on any cloud in the world, whether private or public.

Fineract supports a high volume of transactions. The current Fineract version 1.8 has several improvements that offer financial institutions a high level of transaction per second, at around 300 TPS.

Different FinTechs use Fineract in different ways from Neo banks and digital banks to payment companies, banking-as-a-service companies, investment banks, lenders, decentralized finance companies, e-wallets and more. There are also a number of new actors that are building interesting new features and using Fineract to power these developments.

Fineract supports several financial use cases, asset products, liability products, transactional products, KYC, and more. This opens up endless development opportunities based on Fineract out of the box at the usage level, product level, and the service level.

Key features of Fineract for FinTechs

  • Easy, out of the box development: wallets and accounts.
  • Mapping liabilities: Fineract allows you to identify accounts that generate interest, accounts that don’t generate interest, checking accounts, transactional accounts, wallet accounts, and of course multicurrency accounts, and more.
  • Powerful loan management system: The loan management system is one of the most powerful features in Fineract, offering a huge granularity of products and services, ideas, charges, interest, enabling users to configure on top of Fineract without the need for programming. All loan types being used by online lenders, Neo Banks, and DeFi, decentralized finance, are supported by Fineract throughout their entire loan lifecycle.
  • KYC and Customer Dashboard: Whether your customer has a loan, an account, multiple loans, multiple accounts, or all of the above, you can see everything on one single screen. This 360-degree, holistic view enables businesses to understand their customers and their needs with a single glance, making it an incredibly powerful tool.
  • Reporting and Compliance:  Reporting and compliance plays a critical role for any FinTech or regulated financial institution. Fineract offers a huge number of reports out of the box as well as the development of more specific reports based on Fineract, making this feature very powerful and typical of the system.
  • Account savings wallets functionality: typically used by Neo banks that are digital banks. These banks do not have physical branches, existing in cell phones and providing customer service through their app. FinTechs such as E-wallets, crypto exchanges, and investment banks, all use account savings, and wallets.
  • Flexibility: The openness that allows organizations to use the system and develop on top of it is powerful and very appealing to FinTechs using Fineract.
  • Leveling the playing field: FinTechs are realizing that through the implementation of Fineract, they have attained the same level of product and system capabilities as any big bank in the world. FinTechs are able to develop new solutions, new services on top of Fineract very quickly and attain a competitive advantage.

Open-source software is revolutionizing the financial industry, allowing FinTechs and financial institutions to up their game and level the playing field quickly and effectively through new products, services, and capabilities. March 8th, 2023 marks the 112th International Women’s Day (IWD). The United Nation’s theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. According to the United Nations website : “The United Nations Observance of IWD recognizes and celebrates the women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education”.

We got together with the powerhouse of women at Fiter who are revolutionizing the financial industry each and every day to get their take on women in FinTech, work at Fiter and their perspective on how to empower other women to get into FinTech. Here’s what Fiter’s leading ladies had to say:

Women in FinTech

According to Deepika Choubey, Software Developer at Fiter: “Women bring a unique perspective and set of skills to the table in the fields of tech and FinTech. Historically, these industries have been male dominated,

but in recent years and in Fiter, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace. Women often bring a different perspective to problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, which can be valuable in a tech or FinTech setting.”

Cecilia Menso, Fiter’s Delivery Head, adds: “I believe that us women, in FinTech as in any other industry, bring to the table assets that are highly valuable: our multi-tasking abilities, a special sensitivity that allows us to have empathetic approach, and inner strength to go through crisis, as we do in our aspects of our lives while managing work, personal lives, in some case kids, etc.”

Deepika, and Cecilia know what they’re talking about. In fact, with AI expected to reduce the number of software developers and coders needed in the future, diversity of thought, creativity and emotional intelligence will become game-changers that determine which FinTechs identify new opportunities and expand their market share, and which FinTechs fizzle out and disappear. Women are crucial in providing different perspectives and solutions in this fast-paced, evolving market.

Working at Fiter

Fiter has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to diversity. Here is what the ladies at Fiter had to tell us about working there:

Deepika Choubey: “I like working at Fiter, in which I believe women and our contributions are highly valued”.

Cecilia Menso: “I like working at Fiter, in which I believe women and our contributions are highly valued, respected and sought out. In our company there has been a growing recognition of the importance of diversity and inclusion for all genders, religions, culture, and beliefs, which makes it an awesome place to work.”

Daiana Goldenberg, Fiter’s COO/CFO, had this to add: “I had the privilege of being raised in a house where gender did not determine opportunities and expectations. During my professional life, I’ve never felt that my gender prevented me from growing. That gave me the confidence to find workplaces where I have the same opportunities as men. When I joined Fiter I was the first woman in the house. Since then, I have been delighted to see more women join our team.”

With Fiter realizing its core value of inclusion through diversity within its team and in FinTech, what suggestions do the ladies at Fiter have for promoting other women in FinTech?

Empowering women in FinTech

Daiana Goldenberg: “I strongly think that those companies that are not willing to give women equal opportunities are losing. We bring a different perspective, and diversity only makes teams stronger. I became a mom while working in Fiter. I appreciate the opportunity to work from home, challenge myself, and keep growing professionally while still being there for my family. I´m not saying it´s easy. Making difficult decisions and choosing a path always has a cost but having a supporting network that encourages is essential to feel safe to take some risks to be your best self. Not every woman wants to be a leader in FinTech. But, for those who do, find another woman to support you. We need to support each other to keep reducing the gender gap every day. As a mom of a baby girl, I would like to set an example for her and other women that we can succeed when we support each other.”

Olaide Adepoju, Sales Manager at Fiter: “My career path as an IT Sales Expert in the financial technology industry has given an expression to the inner voice of femininity within me that culture and background attempted to make silent; paying this experience forward to every woman is my promise of a lifetime. Happy International Women’s Day.”

Ivy Bashiru-Usman, Project Manager at Fiter: “I am a woman, first, and also, an accomplished FinTech Project Manager, as there is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish standing on the shoulders of those who came before us, defying all odds, working to solve the technical and social challenges of the day to create a better world for those around us and those who follow us.  Let’s collaborate to show what we can achieve as we continue to march forward. Happy International Women’s Day.”

In an industry that has set out to disrupt traditional financing with creative solutions that enable growth and expansion, workforce diversity is crucial for the development of diverse solutions and thought processes. An industry created by men, run by men, developing products for men will only go so far, eventually missing out on opportunities that lie within the remaining 51% of the world’s population.

While Fiter is diverse by values first, it also recognizes the many benefits and business potential of diversity within its workforce as a catalyst for the revolution it is leading in FinTech. It is Fiter’s hope that more FinTech companies realize the power of diversity and leverage it to disrupt the market. Diversity and the inclusion of women in FinTech is not just the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do if you want to grow your business and disrupt the market.

Olaide thrives on converting leads to relationships as well as networking and meeting new customers.

When Olaide isn’t hard at work bringing in sales, she loves to spend time with family, especially since having reunited with her brother after five long years. Olaide is somewhat of an oxymoron, being a self-proclaimed introvert, yet looking forward to meeting new people every day. Between human interactions on the job and with family, Olaide enjoys surfing the web and discovering new things as well as a good binge on Netflix or vibing to Hip Hop or R&B music. A nice meal of plantain and eggs and a good Liverpool game have also been known to put a smile on Olaide’s face.

And while other Fiter team members we’ve talked to thus far are fans of winter and snow, Olaide is more of a rain person, preferring Nigeria’s rainy season! How’s that for a well-rounded team?

Were Olaide to ever pack for a deserted island, her 3 must-haves would be a sleeping mat, power pack and fresh juice. Olaide believes in living each day as if tomorrow depends on it, which has become her slogan for both work and life in general.

But until such time when Olaide finds herself on a deserted island or visiting her other great love, New York City, her favorite social media platform is LinkedIn hands down. You can find Olaide on LinkedIn discussing everything Open-Source and core banking solutions. And if you want to witness the definition of “speed” live, just send her a message via LinkedIn and Olaide will respond in less than 60 seconds!

Meet Deepika Choubey, a 3-year veteran at Fiter, rocking the Senior Software Engineer position at Fiter. Deepika was born in India and still resides there today. Deepika is passionate about her job, with every day representing a new learning opportunity and bringing on new challenges.

One of the highlights of Deepika’s career  was when the Odoo integration Deepika created for a specific project was picked up by the Fineract community and officially added to Fineract.  There’s nothing like making your mark for the benefit of the entire Fineract community!

When Deepika isn’t hard at work advancing the future of Fineract at Fiter, she enjoys listening to soulful music, spending time with family and friends and…reading up on work topics. It looks like you can take Deepika out of work, but you can’t take the work ethic out of Deepika, even on weekends!

Deepika also enjoys watching Indian Cricket, eating Daal Baati and winter, her favorite season of the year. What is it with the Fiter team and their love for winter? Is it a prerequisite for working at Fiter? LOL

Much like the characteristics of her job, Deepika is highly adaptable and is totally comfortable with people of different backgrounds, personalities and ages. After all, every new person you meet is a new learning opportunity and we already know Deepika is a hardcore learner, right?

Meet John Gathogo, Fiter’s Business Analyst, born and residing in Kenya. John holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering and has been with Fiter for 3 years now, ensuring Fiter customers’ requirements are met at the highest level through Mifos and Fineract.

John is always on top of project delivery, consistently ensuring Fiter customer expectations are exceeded. What John enjoys most about his job is making life easier for Fiter’s end users by developing new features and improving existing ones. With John’s passion for synchronization, optimization, and harmony between different entities, it comes as no surprise John considers the piano to be the most magical musical instrument out there!

When John isn’t hard at work making customers happy, he enjoys weekends with family and friends, good vibes listening to Afrofusion and a good meal of Ugali fish and sukuma wiki. Although John thrives on action and heat at work, he prefers cold seasons in his personal life and not a big fan of heat waves. Regardless, John is all about dynamics at work, enjoying the unique challenges each day brings with it, and delivering top notch performance for the Fiter community.

It is John’s passion and commitment to the Fiter vision that makes us so good as what we do! Should you have any questions for John or would like a Fiter rep to get back to you, please contact us at https://fiter.neodesigners.com.ar/ and we will get back to you promptly.

Meet Pablo Ricobelli, Fiter’s Commercial Director. Pablo is married and based in Argentina. Pablo prides himself on being an unorthodox sales person, using creative, out-of-box thinking to optimize solutions for Fiter’s customers. Pablo is energized by his ability to contribute to Fiter’s success and to make an impact every day.

When Pablo isn’t leading Fiter’s global sales team or driving commercial and pricing strategies, he enjoys running, spending time with family and friends, listening to Pearl Jam and doing his absolute best to stay away from one of the greatest loves of his life: hamburgers. Pablo speaks two languages which he passionately utilizes to curse bilingually when his favorite football team, River Plate, is not having their best moment. Thankfully, the team has been doing well in recent years and the cursing has been kept to a minimum to everyone’s delight.

Pablo enjoys going on vacations that include any location with snow on it, in it or above it, coming up with unconventional commercial proposals that generate happy customers, and growing his knife collection, since Pablo is also an avid knife groupie. But don’t worry – Pablo doesn’t bring the knives to work. At least on good days.

If you are passionate about open source and have questions for Pablo or if you are also into knives and snow, feel free to contact pablo@fiter.io
